Part of the Famous Faces Collection
Emmeline Pankhurst was a British political activist and leader of the British Suffragette movement who helped women win the right to vote. Emmeline founded the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), which adopted the colours of Purple, White and Green for their banners, sashes and flags. Purple stood for the royal blood that flows in the veins of every suffragette, White stood for purity in private and public life and Green was the colour for hope and the emblem of Spring. It is also said that Purple may have been referred to as Violet so that the initals of Green, White and Violet stood for Give Women Votes.
