The Mary Rose was King Henry VIII's favourite naval warship, which he had built when he came to the throne in 1509. It fought in 2 wars against France and 1 against Scotland. In 1545, the Mary Rose capsized in battle and sank just off the Portsmouth coast, but was raised to the surface in 1982 and the largest surviving part of the ship plus other salvaged artefacts are now housed in a dedicated museum in Portsmouth.
